The 42nd Post

So, it's been an eventful year, some positive things have happened and some not so.

I'm hoping that in 2023 I get complete control of my feet back so I can drive a car again, or failing that have managed to get a modified car that will allow me to get back into my old life.

Popping to Cons... seeing friends... popping into new towns for a look around ... nothing too extravagant.

I will say that we take a lot of things for granted and never really think about what would happen if we lost something that we are able to do without thinking. I certainly never expected to have a mysterious infection hit both my legs and have the impact it has.

I'll not get bleak though...

Hope to see a lot of you at Conventions around the country next year, or who knows, maybe you'll hear a knock on the door and it'll be me in my new driver-less car.

Actually if it's a driver-less car it'll probably be the car that's knocking on your door.

All the best for 2023... one thing I do know... it's going to be interesting.

Three big things that happened to me this year - Part Three.

The last significant thing that happened to me was that I've finally managed to buy a house.

Since my divorce I've been renting, it's been a few years now, and I've decided that I like High Wycombe enough to make things a little more permanent.

After months of viewing, placing bids and getting my bids beaten I decided to get my daughter involved in the process.

I set up a few viewings over a weekend and invited Jemma down to view them with me. If I was going to bid more than £5k over the asking price then I needed a second opinion.

Having viewed a few with Jemma, she quite patiently asked me why I was trying to buy the same house that we used to have. The ones I was looking at, she pointed out, will never be as good.

Jemma then selected a few houses to view and one was nothing that I would have selected.

We viewed it.

I didn't think too much of the look of the loft conversion from the outside, it being one of the box types to maximise head room inside. Jemma, again quite patiently, reminded me that I'd be spending most of my time in the room looking out of it than I would on the street looking up at it.

I really liked the rest of it.

It even had a great shed for comic book storage.

I put the offer in, at £10k over asking price, and requested that they leave carpets and curtains.

My offer was accepted.

I moved in in September.

There's even space outside to park my car so it's not on a road. Not that I can use it at the moment.
Settling in .. sorting through my posters / pictures to decided which ones go where whilst trying to not turn the house into a Superhero gallery.
Had my first snow...
and my first Xmas here... sadly on different days.
Looking forward to making it feel more like 'my house' over the coming year.

More 'Game of Thrones'

Well, over Xmas break I caught up with the Targaryens in House of Dragons.

I loved all but the last season of Game of Thrones and was hoping that they'd pick up some of the potential prequels and/or sequels.

Really enjoyed their first attempt...

...can't wait for Season 2.

Managing Kickstarters when you can't drive.

I ran two kickstarters whilst all of this has been going on.

I can't drive to a post office and don't want to keep getting taxis back and forth.

Gary put me onto a Royal Mail service that I wasn't aware of, where they collect the parcels from your home. They even print the labels out for you to stick on them.

A great service that I used a lot in Nov for the WesterNoir postings and that I will use again in a week or so for the Kia Wordsmith postings.

RoyalMail.com

..and you don't have to pay any extra for this service.

Great.

Three big things that happened to me this year - Part Two.

Back on the evening of the 6th July I struggled to get to sleep due to pain in both my legs below the knees. I ended up in absolute agony and had to call 111, as I'd done everything I could think of to ease the pain.

Ultimately an ambulance came out to me and once they'd confirmed that I wasn't having, or going to have, a heart attack weren't really much use.

It pain had eased off a little, but I was left with massively inflamed and swollen legs (below the knee) and feet.

I spent the next week in my rented flat, on the third floor, unable to do much at all apart from take paracetamol and Ibuprofen, keep my legs up and apply hot and cold compresses to my shins and feet.

Failing to get to the Dr in the surgery I eventually booked an appointment with the Health Centre's Physio, as I was struggling to walk, I had developed this shuffle where my feet never left the ground. If my shuffling feet came in contact with a rug or anything like that them I'd effectively fall over it. It was very graceful.

Having to take a taxi ride to the Physio, I found myself sat in the Health Centre on the 13th July, still in some pain (but nothing like the worst of it which was on the 7th). I wasn't surprised by the look on the Physio's face as I did my strange walk, which was an improvement from the shuffle, towards him. I effectively couldn't lift my feet at the ankle, effectively raising the toes, and had to lift my knees high and swing my lower legs to flick the foot out and then land my weight on it, so it all came down together with a splat.

The physio said I had 'dropsy' due to nerve damage sustained whilst my legs had swollen but was stunned by the swelling still there around my legs and ankles and went to see a Dr. He came back with a prescription for a strong anti-biotic.

A week later I was back in, actually seeing a Dr this time, and was prescribed an anti-inflammatory. The anti-biotics had done some good but my legs and feet were still swollen and I still struggled to walk.

A week later, not much improvement I tried to get to see the Dr again, to follow up on the anti-inflammatories, failed to do so and so took a taxi to the local hospital's A&E.

I didn't have to wait too long as it turned out, and after a quick examination was sent to a hospital (not the closest one though) to have a DVT scan.

Another taxi ride later, and after the test I was informed that it wasn't DVT and to come back tomorrow for a different scan.

A few taxi rides later, there's no way I could drive with my feet as they were, and I found myself back the next day with another negative result from another scan.

I was asked to stay in the ward until they could sort me out.

Although I was only dressed in shorts, t-shirt and saddles (the only shoes I could get my feet into) with my wallet and iPhone in my pockets I checked myself in.

The NHS staff are all wonderful human beings. I was constantly humbled by pretty much everything they did, day in and day out.

A week later and I was checking out again with the knowledge that my thyroid was incredibly small and not producing anywhere near enough Thyroxine.

They never did explain the infections but I had a diagnosis, knowledge of a whole load of things I haven't got and a prescription to sort me out.

It's funny that before all of this I had thought I had bad congestion, my voice sounded very growly and a little drunk.

Turns out this was all linked and my voice is now back to normal.

Sadly the same can't be said of my feet. My walking is much improved but I still can't lift my toes as I stride along and so I have to lift my feet and put them down carefully in front of me with each step.

I get overtaken by everybody now.

I still can't drive as my feet can't work a clutch, accelerator or brake, which has a massive impact on my mobility. Missing Cons, having to wfh despite things lifting (rightly or wrongly) from a Covid perspective and generally not being able to just pop somewhere if needed, or fancied.

Looks like this might be it I guess, as good as my feet will get, so I'm going to have to look at cars that you can drive with your hands, an automatic with hand controlled brake and accelerator I guess.

I'll decide after my next appointment with the hospital, at the end of Jan.

Yep, not a great second half of the year and frustrating to still be impacted by it all some 6 months later, but there are people in worse situations.

The Stephenson's Robot Companion Book - and just when the colouring is going well...

.....you come to this page where El Indio! has had a load of fun.

...and you just know that this is going to take quite a while to complete.
Better stock up on the tea and biscuits, select a few good tracks and get cracking.

The Stephenson's Robot - Companion Book

I've been working on pulling together the companion book to Stephenson's Robot.

This will contain the martian robots pages plus the back stories of the lead, and significant, characters from the Stephenson's Robot storyline.

I now have all the pages I need from uniquely talented El Indio! for the martian pages, and the final back story, this one from the the pen of Russell Olson.

It's been fun working with all these different artists over the years and I think the book is looking fabulous.

As with the Stephenson's Robot book, I'm spending a lot of time remastering this one, moving stories around a little, adding extra martian robot pages and a few other surprises here and there.

Depending on how busy our production schedule is I'm hoping to print this sometime around Summer 2023.

Three big things that happened to me this year - Part One.

This year saw me cut my ties with Accent UK. It wasn't an easy decision to make as Colin Mathieson, Barry Renshaw and I started Accent UK a little more than 20 years ago.

Barry left us pretty early on but Colin and I were regulars at numerous Conventions, in the UK and abroad, over the years and the first 10 years or so were great.

There came a point however when I noticed that we were both looking for different things from Accent UK.

I wanted it to become bigger, to keep evolving, to produce more comics and maybe look to publish the work of others (although I was never 100% sure of this). Colin, for his part, loved the more organic small comic company that produced work we'd written and drawn ourselves. Just as we did when we started. Me with my little Strange Times comic and him with his Zulu - Water Cart Rescue comic.

I think I quickly realised that my artistic ability would never keep up with the ideas that I wanted to get out there, and I soon found myself enjoying the writing more than the art.

As the years progressed and I produced more and more books with more and more talented artists, I was always conscious that my 'stuff' was taking over the Convention tables, pushing Colin's to the edge of the table.

Little ideas I had for improving things with Accent UK, a yearly 'brochure' advertising the Cons we'd be at, the books due to be produced etc for example, never really captured Colin's support. In hindsight, I see now that it was taking him further and further away from what he wanted Accent UK to be.

I dwelled on it for a little while and then during one Thought Bubble Convention I looked at what Time Bomb Comics were doing and it was effectively what I'd been wanting to do for a few years. David Morris and I talked about my joining them, something we'd joked about over the years, and moving my work under their umbrella, and it all looked to fit pretty well. Very well in fact.

I didn't handle the message with Colin very well, for which I'll be forever sorry. I can be pretty direct and immediate when I've worked things out in my head, despite it all being pretty new to the other person. After a few weeks Colin accepted that it was probably for the best, and we started having our own tables at Conventions.

It pleases me to see that Colin now has the chance to take over the whole table and fill it with his own comics and other little bits and bobs, making it much more interesting than our old Accent UK tables. He looks happier too, in his element, and I don't think I'm just trying to make myself feel better by saying that.

He's selling more of his own books and producing little prints as well.

I doubt our friendship will ever get back to where it was, for which I'm very sorry, but I still think it was the best thing to do.

My meetings with Time Bomb Comics have all been very positive and constructive, we are all pulling in the same direction. The latest WesterNoir TPB Volume 2 is the first under the Time Bomb Comics logo but there will be plenty more coming.

Re-read an old favourite.

I loved Peter David's run on X-Factor when it first came out.

Great character development, great situation to drop them all into, solid art throughout. What an interesting Jamie Madrox san be if used correctly.

So when I saw this Omnibus in the local Forbidden Planet I just had to pick it up.

But would it be as good as I remember it?

In short, yes.

I really enjoyed reading it all again and think it was probably Peter David at his best, although he did a lot of good stories back in the day.

The DVD that surprised me the most this year.

I bought this as I quite enjoyed the latest Suicide Squad and really liked what James Gunn did with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

But Peacemaker

Really?

A very two dimensional character in the Suicide Squad movie, but he certainly had layers in the TV series. Very enjoyable.

Look forward to Season 2, and to seeing what James Gunn does with the DC movie universe, although that said I do wish they'd let Zack Snyder finish what he was doing first.

WesterNoir Volume 1 books have reached Diamond's Warehouse

Despite the postal strikes etc in the UK, the boxes of WesterNoir Volume 1 have made it to Diamond.

Hopefully they'll be on their way across the Atlantic over the next few days.

WesterNoir Volume 1 on its way to Diamond Distributions

It's been a tough year for me, I'll post later about my time in hospital but the ongoing result is that I'm currently unable to drive.

Before all of this happened we got WesterNoir Volume 1 listed in the Diamond catalogue, so that it could be ordered by shops around the globe, and we got a pretty good order from the USA.

And then I got ill, and then I moved house and then I realised that I'd be unable to get the stock from my Storage Locker easily or get them from my house to Diamond's warehouse up north.

Well a friend stepped in to help get them from my storage locker to my house and from there I used the Royal Mail's Collection service to get them from my house to Diamond.

It's a great feeling sending the books on their way.

We'll put Volume 2 in the catalogue sometime next year, probably around June.

WesterNoir Kickstarter Backer Rewards...

...have all been shipped out, except for the usual stragglers which we'll be rounding up over the next few weeks.

And these include the fabulous commissioned Josiah Black by the very talented Simo.

Enjoy your read.

Dungeons, Dragons and Dice rolling

Last weekend I got together with a bunch of mates for our biannual game of D&D.

We are that old, and have been playing that long, that we still use 2nd Edition rules.

We have experienced players and players who, despite having played for around 20 years, still call themselves novices.

Over the years the snacks have reduced in quantity as the waistlines have increased (strangely I though the converse would be true) and we drink more tea and coffee these days than beer.

But was still love the game. it's always great fun.

We managed to not have any deaths amongst the characters this time around, although we did come very close a couple of times and we did progress quite well, or so we think, the DM may have a different opinion.

Looking forward to the next session.

Wednesday

I'm really enjoying the new Tim Burton series on Netflix; Wednesday.

Recommend you give it a try, it's vintage Burton.

WesterNoir Kickstarters are being sent out.

I'm working my way through the mailings of WesterNoir packs to all those who backed us on Kickstarter. It's great that's the Royal Mail have a service now where they come to your house and collect your parcels, makes things some much easier.

Sadly they have a strike on this weekend which slows things down a little but I've made a solid start.

Thought Bubble 2022

This was the first event where I've been part of the Time Bomb tables, we had three (I moved my previously booked table next to theirs).

It did feel a little strange not be good next to Colin, but there had been a few Cons before where we'd been split up due to the challenges of booking tables, so I was used to it a bit. And of course I had Steve Tanner and Gary Crutchley to wind up.

It really was great to be another Con, after an absence due to an illness I've suffered and not being able to drive meant having to take taxis and trains, but it was worth it.

The Halls were full of great looking comics from very talented people. Some I know and many I don't. It was great catching up with people I've collaborated with in the past and to make a couple of contacts for future collaborations.

On Saturday we had Ian Ashcroft at the table with us, selling some of his original art and copies of Kia, and it was really good to get time to discuss issue 4 with him. Yep, we'll be cracking on with that in the new year.

Having three new titles on the table was a new experience for me, but all sold very well. Lots of people coming back for latest issues as well as new readers buying the full sets.

Evening meals were relaxed, once we'd found somewhere that could fit us in, and we discussed a lot of future projects, exciting times ahead. Great to catch up with Colin and Scott on Saturday night, where despite there being no burgers Scott really enjoyed his meal :o)

Sunday was quieter than Saturday, as these things tend to be, but we still did very well.

All in all another very successful show for us and one where Steve and Gary actually seemed to get on...

Looking forward to next year's Con already.

..and just in time for Thought Bubble...

 Kia issue 3 arrived.

All set then.

Sunday, 30 October 2022

WesterNoir Volume 2 and Scar are both back from the printers...

 ...and they look great.

really happy with how they turned out
just need to get Kia Wordsmith Issue 3 and we're all set for Thought Bubble launches.

Constructing Comics Podcast

We, Ian and I, were invited back onto the Constructing Comics Podcast.

Great to catch up with the guys again and nice to talk comics, and very nice of them to time it with the Kia Kickstarter.

You can have a listen over on Constructing Comics Podcast.

Kia Wordsmith Issue 3 and Scar are now on Kickstarter

Well, actually they are half way through the campaign and doing pretty well.

You can check it out over at Kia Kickstarter.

Thanks to everyone who has already backed it.

Scar

I've been working on a Kia Wordsmith companion book,  a Tale of the Arrakans, called Scar.

Once again I've been very fortunate with the artist as Joseph Parangue has illustrated it and I've managed to get into Matt Soffe's busy schedule for colouring.

Andy Bloor has worked his magic on the design, but has given me a choice.

WesterNoir on Kickstarter

In happier news, WesterNoir Volume 2 has just hit its target and is FUNDED over on Kickstarter. Do pop over and check it out...

Ending of an era.

Sad news for me to report, Colin and I have been finding that we're looking for different things from Accent UK over the last few years and have decided it best if we close AccentUK down.

It's a very amicable split, we'll still be seen chatting at Cons and at social gatherings, but from here on I'll be printing my comics under TimeBomb Comics Ltd as I join Steve Tanner and David Morris on their board.

Here's the official press release:-

Accent UK Comics No More

Accent UK Comics, comprising creator's Dave West and Colin Mathieson, one of the UK's longest established independent comic collectives announce that they are to disband.

Founded in 2001 in the North West, Accent UK united the small press publishing activities of Barry Renshaw’s Engine Comics, Dave’s Deva Comics and Colin’s M56 Comics into a single collective.

A string of themed anthology titles were produced such as Remembrance Days, Phobias and Pirates  drawing on submissions from the UK’s then small press community including the likes of Dave Baillie, Jason Cobley, Ben Dickson, Garen Ewing and Dave Hitchcock. Red Eye Magazine, a much loved spotlight on the UK independent comics scene with contributions from Matt Badham, Leon Hewitt and others, was edited by Barry and published by Accent UK until his departure in 2006.

From 2007, Accent UK’s titles were distributed globally by Diamond Comic Distributors leading to contributions to their themed anthologies ZOMBIES, ROBOTS, WESTERN etc. from the likes of Keiron Gillen, Steve Bissette, Frazer Irving, John Reppion, Leah Moore and many others. A series of self-contained one-shot or comic series written by Dave and illustrated by other artists were published, including WOLFMEN with Andy Bloor, the Eagle award-winning WHATEVER HAPPENNED TO THE WORLD'S FASTEST MAN? with Marlene Lowe, STEPHENSON’S ROBOT with Indio, the acclaimed WESTERNOIR series co-written with artist Gary Crutchley and KIA WORDSMITH with Ian Ashcroft. The MOMENTS OF ADVENTURE series collected Colin’s historical fiction strips and a trilogy of works were published from Danish artist Martin Flink; THE MAN OF GLASS, THE TROLL and THE LIZARD.

In recent years, Accent UK returned to their anthology roots with a series of annual comics, THE ASYLUM based on the world’s largest steampunk festival of the same name in which Colin, Dave and  Gary Crutchley regularly participated in talks, workshops and events.

Accent UK published around 60 comics and graphic novels, the majority of which were designed by Andy Bloor and featured regular colour collaborations from Matt Soffe.

Regulars on the convention scene with nearly 200 appearances, many overseas including the US, Canada, Finland and Denmark, where since 2004, Accent UK were regulars and enjoyed a loyal following.

Colin says “It is with great sadness that this announcement is made but both Dave and I can take great pride from the respect that the Accent UK name is held in and the achievements of the many writers and artists that we have worked with. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to, reviewed or bought our books over the years and to our families for supporting us”.

Dave says “It’s been a great journey, both Colin and I evolving our styles and perfecting our craft over the years and with Accent UK we both have much to be proud of. We have lots of great memories of collaborations and things that happened at the many Comic Conventions and we will both continue to be involved in the independent UK Comic scene, in our own ways, for many years to come. Thanks to all who were with us over the last 20 years, in whatever capacity, your support has always been appreciated”.

Accent UK's website and social media channels will remain open until further notice to allow outstanding orders and distribution obligations be fulfilled. Both Colin and Dave remain active in the comics community and news of forthcoming projects and activities will be released in due course.

Neither of us are stopping our comic creative output, I have the latest Volume of WesterNoir up on Kickstarter at the moment and Colin is applying finishing touches to his Zulu Graphic novel, so keep your eyes open for us at Cons and the like.

Cons are a little fluid at the moment.

The sad news is that Tripwire's Comic Convention in Bristol has been cancelled.

The good news is that I've managed to blag my way into two others.

Firstly in Taunton this weekend, at the Somerset Library in Taunton itself and then at the ACME comic Con in Glasgow towards the end of September.

Looking forward both.

WesterNoirBook One is in June's Previews

Although they've somehow used the wrong cover, WesterNoir Book 1 is now available to buy in the International section of the latest Previews.

You can order a copy from your local comic shop using the code:- JUN221164.

Wow. London MCM.

What an incredible weekend.

All three days of the Con were very busy, very enjoyable and well sold to a lot of new Customers, as well as returning ones.

I took the post apocalyptic headpiece made by Drone to draw attention to my table, and it certainly worked.

As you can see, I even had a few copies of Robot Shorts available, only 6 issues sadly, and they all sold. I'm not sure I have any more.

WesterNoir was top seller as always, with some interesting new customers coming along for the ride...

Yes, I am sorry that's WesterNoir Book 2 isn't out yet but I promise it will be at the same Con next year.

The three days were pretty much the same, lots of interest in comics, Saturday was the busiest day but both Friday and Sunday were busier than they have been in the past.

It was great to catch up with fellow creators, some of whom I haven't seen since before the Pandemic.

I know of a number of people who sold out over the three days, include Jed McPherson, who had the table next me, as I bought his last comic (Transmissions).

All in all a very tiring but very successful three days.

I just need to recover now...

London MCM

I'm all packed up and ready for an early start tomorrow so I can set up the table before 10am.

I'll be at C19 in the Comic Village, do pop by and say hello if you're in the area, should be a good one.

Portsmouth Comic Con - A great southern Con.

Well it was a few weeks ago now but I thought I'd write a short summary of how I found it getting back to Portsmouth and, well, getting back to Cons.

This one started with a panel, something I've not done for a while, outside in the Sun.

I must say that David Baillie made us all feel relaxed and involved and I really enjoyed it. Great to be sat next to Kai Wordsmith artist and collaborator Ian Ashcroft.

Two days of great attendance from the public, good engagement with people who stopped at the table and great catching up with other creators and at the end of the weekend I realised what a good time I'd had.

Not just that I sold a good number of books, always a good thing, but also that's the Con had that family friendly feel to it that a lot of the larger events lack.

Looking forward to doing more in the future.

Thursday, 5 May 2022

Portsmouth Comic Con is this weekend.

This weekend I'll be flying solo at the Portsmouth Comic Con.

It's a great Con and I'm really glad to see it back.

Do pop by the table and say 'Hi' if you are there, it's been a while.

Dr. Strange 2

I took the day off today and went to see the new Dr. Strange movie.

I'm not going to spoil anything for anybody but will just say that I really enjoyed it. Beginning to end.

There was more horror in it than anything else from the MCU so I'd think twice before letting your children see it but... yep... a great movie.

Sunday, 24 April 2022

Got a super-sub space at the London MCM at the end of next month.

I applied to the London MCM event taking place at the end of May a good while back and sadly didn't make the cut. This is the second time this has happened and like last time I managed to get a table as someone has dropped out.

I won't be at the one later in the year however as I'll be at the Nottingham Comic Con and as these things go it looks unlikely that I'll be at any of the future events so please pop over and say 'Hi' at the event, it may be my last.

Two more conventions

I've just been notified that I've been accepted into both the Nottingham Comic Con and Thought Bubble events that take place later this year. Check the side bar t the right for dates.

I love both of these events, and it's great that they are taking place again this year, real comic shows.

RIP David McKee

Very sad news last week that David McKee has sadly died.

I've been a fan of his since childhood. Mr Benn was my favourite show as a young boy growing up in London and the character, his ethics and stories seem to have followed me throughout my life.

David himself hashed more than an influence on my art style which is not really suited to comic books but seems to be hardwire into my brain now..

I was fortunate to meet David back in August in 2017. You can read my short report here.

It's a memory I'll keep for as long as I can. Sitting next to him and chatting whilst he doodled in my Mr Benn books (one of which he remarked upon as looking like it had been stolen from a library :o)

Kids today know him for Elma, older kids (like me) know him for Mr Benn and King Rollo, and maybe Melric the Magician if you were very well read.

David wasn't limited to this though and produced some truly inspired and thoughtful works. Six Men, for example, explains how wars may happen in a way that a 6 year old can understand.

I wish I'd had the opportunity to meet him again but am glad that I took advantage of the opportunity that did present itself to me.

AccentUK website revamped

It's been out of action for a while now but we've recently revamped our Website, AccentUKComics.com.

You can see what we've produced over the past 20 years, in the Archive, and buy things that are still in print. The numbers we have for some titles are getting low and we don't reprint these days, we tend to collect them into Trade Paperbacks.

Stephenson's Robot - inside cover design

..and how's this for the inside covers...

Stephenson's Robot remastered

Over the last couple of Covid years I've been remastering Stephenson's Robot

Turning what would have been a collection of comics into a Graphic Novel. A story that hopefully flows through the chapters nicely, rather than have a break every 24 pages or so.

This has involved a little re-writing, some page re-ordering, some new pages and of course completing the last two issues that were never actually printed as individual comics.

The fun bit is starting now with Andy Bloor assisting with the design elements of the book.

First up is the cover image.

Just booked my first Con for 2022.

I just booked a table at the Tripwire Bristol Comic  Con in September. II haven't done a Comic Con in Bristol for a very long time, looking forward to it.

Hmmm, it seems such a long way away, I need to get a few more in the bag.

Kingdom - The Model

Well Jon Ayre has completed his modelling of Kingdom and this is the pose that we'll be looking to print. It's all very new to me so I've no idea how much this will cost and whether it'll make sense financially but I need to see these on the table at Cons across the country.

Jon has offered to see if he can find somewhere that will print it off.

I can't wait to get one myself and paint it up.
